Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Eric C — 08 Dec 2009
I read a description of this film that used the word "slight". Although I find the way the word was used as maybe a bit unfair, it is true. None of the events of the film are extreme or overwhelming, but the depth of the events is strong.
The film is emotional powerful enough to make the voice over bookends unnecessary. It felt tacked on frankly the film was shot and edited well enough that the points the VO was trying to convey had already come across.
It doesn't help either that Steve Martin does the VO, not as his character but as an omniscient third party. It was have been better for it to be a different voice entirely. Worth a watch.
