This film is based on a "novella" written by Steve Martin, starring, narrated & produced by Steve Martin. I wouldn't be surprised if he also wrote the theme tune. What works in the book doesn't translate so directly onto screen without losing the realism of the situations.
The narration throughout the film is a pretty poor and patronising technique. Martin's character is quite despicable and creepy, staring from his mountain-top palace through his binoculars. Schwartzman & Danes' relationship is much better and the saving grace of this drom-com which is enough to make it watchable and enjoyable.
