Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Jose Angel B — 10 May 2011
I really really liked this movie! I think it was one of the best of last year and totally overlooked! It was sweet and funny and the type of film you could easily do an analysis of! It was just chock-full of allusions and comparisons and metaphors and full-circleness and character foils. The soundtrack was excellent; very ominous as if to say something that isn't being said; it leads the audience but not down the path we think. I was also draw into the story, I felt for the characters you care for them. And its much like life; its a romantic comedy that isn't; there is no clear climax, the ending isn't obvious. It wasn't boring life; trying to be as plain to truth as 'Junebug' did. It was exciting but normal. As the movie ended: "thats life".
Yet a second viewing some years later gives a different reading. It is a little or maybe a lot creepy, yet the ending is sweet and romantic. It was an odd film but still a good film!
