Review of Shoot 'Em Up (2007) by Simon B — 18 Apr 2010
Plainly a ridiculous film, I was expecting terrible dialogue, great fight scenes and no-holds barred action. For the most part, that's what I got, but done with unexpected style. I was suprised by the quality of the film overall, however; of course, it was terrible dialogue, vague backstories and ham-fisted motfs.
What makes Shoot 'Em Up more than just a... well, a shoot 'em up, is that it knows this, and secure in the knowledge that it doesn't have to justify itself, it becomes a parody of the genre, but without the annoying campyness or 'smash-into-your-face-this-is-a-comedy' of the 'Scary Movie' brigade.
The terrible dialogue was delived without a twinkle in the eye or hammy acting, just with the wearied and cynical deadpan of Clive Owen doing what he was born to do.
