Review of Shock Treatment (1981) by Jon H — 13 Jul 2008
Much debate is to be had over whether this is a sequel to RHPS, my take is that it is a continuation of themes. The story is once again an unconventional dance through Freudian psychosexual analysis and a social commentary on repression.
When I first saw it year's ago I hated it, it lacked theatricality of RHPS, but on second viewing I realised how ahead of it's time it really is. A searing comment on television's consuming ability to preach and sell us our values, along with some very interesting directorial nuances.
The concept of Dentonvale, the middle american town being a TV show is a great pastiche and is a reminder of what a shame Richard O'Brien hasn't written another musical since.
