Review of Shock Corridor (1963) by Sean C — 25 Jun 2010
A full-on nightmare. Fuller on occasion gets some of the more unnerving details right (a catatonic perched on a radiator; the girls surrounding Johnny prior to attacking him; the way staff seems always around the corner instead of close by as they're supposed to be), on occasion comes out with wild surreal details (the home movies in brilliant technicolor--I keep thinking Ken Russell took a look at this and realized just how nuts he could go on the big screen) but perhaps the single most unsettling element in a highly unsettling film is the protagonist Johnny's (Peter Breck) half-explained descent into madness.
Because it's only half explained (Stress? Projection? Storytelling convenience?) it can happen at any time, to any one--you, f'rinstance.
