Review of Shinjuku Incident (2009) by Greg C — 25 Jul 2009
Derek Yee seems to thoroughly enjoy embarrassing poor old Jackie Chan by constantly putting him in situations in which he, in a Benny Chan movie for example, would fight his way out gallantly, thereby making it pretty obvious that Jackie Chan has no sense of dramatic acting whatsoever.
Since The Shinjuku Incident is in essence a drama and not an action movie, it therefor fails rather miserably. The movie's character driven plot is simply too much for it's main actor to carry, especially notable in the sidetracked romantic theme featuring a criminally underdeveloped love triangle between Jackie, Xu Jinglei and Fan Bingbing.
For a darker and more potent movie covering a similar theme, try Miike's Shinjuku Triad Society instead.
