Review of Shinjuku Incident (2009) by Marcel D — 16 Dec 2009
Jackie Chan steps into the world of gritty Asian cinema in a role unlike any other. For once Jackie Chan plays a man without awesome Kung-Fu powers and instead plays a desperate refugee looking for work in the Japanese mafia.
Rest assured, there's still violence and Jackie isn't exactly a pansy all of a sudden but here he prioritises good story-telling. A lot like John-Claude in JVCD, we get to see Jackie act in his native-tongue for a change which leads to a better performance than anything he has done for American audiences.
But why would anyone want to see Jackie Chan not do Kung-fu or rad stunts? Good question. This flick will be most appealing for big-time Chan Fans who want to see him do something different. Respect the man and his latest project. There's plenty of cool on offer. It isn't the best thing that Hong-Kong/Japan has to offer in the way of gritty-crime drama but its worth a look for fans of the genre.
