Review of Shine a Light (2008) by C F — 24 Apr 2008
A damn fine concert film. The concert itself is a blast, with Jagger and company performing all the hits with an impressive amount of energy and skill. The film looks and sounds great, too. Shots range from perfunctory to captivating, capturing practically every conceivable angle and creating an experience that's almost as good as actually being there.
The highlight of the film has to be Buddy Guy's performance with the Stones, which completely brings the house down. The backstage footage, which showcases the complexity of trying to plan out a concert film, also ends up being one of the most interesting parts of the movie.
In the end, I felt that the only thing holding back my full enjoyment of it was the fact that I'm not really familiar with most of the Rolling Stones work. If you're a Stones fan, then it's a must-see.
Otherwise, it's still a lot of fun. Try to check it out in IMAX while you have the chance; it makes nice use of the format.
