Review of Shine a Light (2008) by Gareth M — 17 Sep 2008
I guess you would have to be a Stones fan to rate it as high as I did. Scorsese is the reason I didn't rate it higher, though. The opening is a self-important avoidance struggle mocking Jagger's issues with the set decor and camera equipment.
The closing is a glammed-up faux exit/applause, thrown in (I'm assuming) because Scorsese didn't have enough to do. They should've let Mick cuss more than twice, even if it means taking the R rating.
And they should've left every song in and not spoken over so much of Richards' stuff. I really wanted a big-budget high-def spectacle depicting the night. What I got was an undeserving director's poor intent to make someone else's something his own.
Also, I can't believe they didn't do "Happy", "Gimme Shelter", or "It's Only Rock and Roll". Good enough for a fan.
