Review of Shine (1996) by Josh S — 31 Oct 2007
Whether or not this film is an accurate depiction of David Helfgott's life, it's fairly obnoxious. His love life with Vanessa Redgrave's character is underdeveloped and trite, and Geoffrey Rush's storyline is easily the least interesting scene-for-scene; and his Oscar-winning performance is one of the most grating of my lifetime.
The scenes with Noah Taylor and Armin Mueller-Stahl are beautifully poignant and the film quickly derails from there. Some good stuff but the stuff of Hallmark bullshit.
