Review of Shine (1996) by Alyssa N — 13 May 2008
Geoffrey Rush, with his incredible Oscar-winning performance, portrays the struggles, hardships, and successes of David Helfgott, a talented piano player with schizoaffective disorder. The other actors and director also do a fine job at showing both the devastating and heartwarming moments of David's life, but somehow the movie feels a bit incomplete.
The leap between David's childhood and adulthood is jarring, and we never fully see how one develops into the other. Overall though, this is a fascinating, dramatic film about a complex and remarkable person that's definitely worth seeing, even if it's mainly for Rush's performance.
