Review of She's the Man (2006) by Jc E — 07 Sep 2010
Given my gender, it?s understandable why this movie didn?t really register with me. It?s not that Shakespearian classics can?t successfully be given a modern comedic update ? just look at ?10 Things I Hate About You? ? but this film just falls into the implausible scenario category, mixed with clichéd characters and zealous feminism.
Some parts of the film really worked, but having Amanda Bynes (Hairspray) pretend to be a boy looks about as bad as the Wayan brothers playing white girls. I?ll give her some credit ? she?s got charisma, but she has yet to prove herself as an actress who can carry a movie.
Plus, Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe) is the love interest ? he didn?t help with the movie carrying. The parts of the film that worked were minor ? Vinnie Jones (Smokin Aces II: Assassin?s Ball) as the soccer coach was a highlight, as was the encouraging idea that divorced parents could get back together.
However, as far as Jones goes, I doubt I?m the only one that wanted to see him go Sphinx (?Gone in 60 Seconds? reference) on the intolerable David Cross (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel). Die-hard Shakespearians will likely take offense to this retelling of ?Twelfth Night?, but they don?t really need to go to the original work to be put off by the film.
The annoying high school clichés and cookie-cutter characters do that job all on their own.
