Review of She's Out of My League (2010) by Jiana W — 25 Nov 2010
Haha, what a pleasant surprise. Jay Baruchel's still incredibly stupid-looking/sounding. The fact that he constantly slurs when he speaks is probably my biggest issue. But the story itself is really cute and sweet. For a romantic comedy, it does well in the originality department. Although the whole "rushing to the plane to stop your lover from making a huge mistake" is ever-so-cliche.
It's not as raunchy as I thought it would be. The acting was good and the dialogue was really funny. Nate Torrence was just the *cutest* as Kirk's buddy, Devon, an optimistic sweetheart whose constant references to Disney movies and happy endings just made him adorable. He was like a teddy bear. I just wanted to squeeze him. In my opinion, Torrence stole most of the scenes in which he appeared.
I also liked that the Molly character wasn't empty like I originally believed she would be. Her intro is dramatic. The camera focuses primarily on her assets and the reaction she gets from the male species. I figured it'd be just another vapid hot chick; eye candy of the Jessica Alba persuasion. As you watch it though, Eve gives her character a kind of sweetness. So much so that you can actually believe that she is genuinely interested in Kirk, and that she's a genuinely nice person. It isn't forced on us by the script. It just is. She isn't reduced to just being something for the guys to drool at. She has a brain and a heart. I think that's one of the things that I really liked most about the movie and what set it apart from a lot of romcoms out there today.
