Review of She's Gotta Have It (1986) by Ben A — 24 Mar 2009
I just finished watching this movie on On Demand (can Comcast please change that name, its annoying to type and to say). This movie is probably now more of interest only to see where Spike started. I noticed a lot of conventions/themes that he goes on to use and re-use in other, better films. Its all here, its just rougher.
The stories message is actually a good one, its just told in a rather plain way that isn't as engaging as it could be. The actors in general are flat- except for Spike's own character, Mars. Its kind of odd to think that Mars would go on to more notoriety as the "Air Jordan" guy having started as a love interest, of sorts, in this indie film. The movie feels a lot like other indie films of the late 80s/early 90s. I actually dug the cinematography, sure its kind of playing on French New Wave, but I can't ignore the outright love Spike's camera has for New York. I would only recommend this film to Spike Lee fans or anyone who wants to get a taste of independent film from that era.
