Review of She's Gotta Have It (1986) by Eric R — 04 Jun 2011
Spike Lee's breakthrough film is probably my favorite film of his. It tells the story of Nola, a nymphomaniac of sorts. She currently has three men in her life, all being very distinct individuals.
Greer, the self absorbed pretty boy who spends more time looking at himself than Nola, Mars, the walking brooklyn stereotype (played by Lee himself) who hasn't had a job in 2 years, and Jaimie, the polite nice man who is actually in love with Nola.
The film uses some fun storytelling techniques with the characters introducing themselves to the camera and talking about Nola and her sexual appetite. He also mixes in still photography and even transitions from b&w to color for one scene of the film, which is well motivated.
Its raw and clearly a unique vision from a filmmaker who is presenting a few different archetypes which exist in the black community while also examining a young woman's sexual choices which were incredibly taboo, specifically for woman.
