Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by Ricardo V — 29 Sep 2007
There are things in films that are great to see. I like terrence malick films because of how utterly beautiful they are, I like snappy dialogue that crackles like in "glengary glen ross" or "closer" I like inventive ways to use the camera like godard's early films or like hitchcock, but there is nothing that I love more than a film in which there is an actor/or actress who makes me believe completely that they are who they portray.
when an actor completely 'gets' a character, everything from the way they dress, walk, talk, act, tiny mannerisms all together make you feel like u're not watching a movie star but a person who truly understands her character, where they're coming from, where they want to go, what they need to leave behind in order to acheive it.
I love maggie gyllenhaal in this film, she completely surprised me, I never knew she had this range. she is raw and venturous and true to her character. there is nothing better to see than this, it pulls the curtain of fantasy that cinema brings and makes you believe she is who she is.
it strikes you right in the center of your heart when you see great acting. it can do things that you simply cannot get by simply reading a book. it's a good film.
