Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by Danielle S — 27 Apr 2008
An indie production with Maggie Gyllenhaal as Sherry, a troubled woman just out of prison for drugrelated crimes.
Her goal is to reconnect with her daughter, that has been taken cared of by her brother and his girlfriend during her prison time.
A question arises. Does everyone deserve a second chance? It is a hard question. I am not sure on the answer. A problem arises for me as well. I do not really care that much about Sherry and her battle to take care of her child. She floats around and fucks around. Does she really try to come clean and make it? Then again, I am glad to not see a sleazy Hollywood stereotypical solution. Maggie Gyllenhaal breathes life into Sherry for sure. Nevertheless, this piece of film did not overwhelm me. It did not really touch and move me the way I was hoping it would. I believe this movie is too fragmented in its storyline, which creates a sense of not taking part of what you are seeing. It went in one eye and out the other. Not a must see.
