Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by ♥Robyn — 24 Nov 2011
Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors working today. Next to her work, the preening self-consciousness of Meryl Streep is revealed as the joke it is. Maggie finds a character's elemental nature and presents it with such candor you swear you know this fictional person. Or could. Her world is genuine, every expression and movement true to everyday life.
Too bad here that the story isn't just a bit better written. The script desperately needs a confrontation between Maggie and her sister-in-law, who needs to be much further developed given she's the enemy.
Giancarlo Esposito -- you should know him as the Chicken Man meth master from Breaking Bad, puts in a powerful performance -- raw where Fring is tightly controlled, and there's no resolution. Oh well.
Up there it says the movie is not entirely believable. That was written by an idiot who grew up in a suburb and had their ass kissed every day. This is a movie about life sucking, which it does. All the time.
