Review of Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942) by Jonas Å — 08 Jun 2011
This was a fascinating look into 1942 British propaganda. Here we have the famous Rathbone/Bruce pairing as the great detective and his well-meaning sidekick. To its credit, this movie harps less on Dr.
Watson's ineffectuality than many of the later ones, and allows him several moments of, at least, usefulness. The pro-English sentiment runs high, a clear attempt to bolster morale, particularly in the wonderful little interchange between Watson and Holmes at the end, complete with a modified quote from Richard II.
