Review of Shelter (2007) by Aaron R — 05 Jul 2008
Anyone who knows me know how repellent I find gay cinema in general, the overt promiscuousness, the lack of any form of reality (outside Ang Lee), the everyone-is-a-muscle-.
Buff-slut-and-all-that-matters-is-shagging-everyone-and -speak-like-a-girl stereotypical shite that continually re-inforces what's so wrong with the gay community. These films breed the fuckheaded mentality of 98% of the gay population. So what a pleasure it was to see this. Yes it's unashamedly contrived, saccharine heavy and hollywood ended but it least it boasts 3-dimensional characters and a set of rather confidently real situations to anchor what could've been a really dreary ride. All the performances were solid and the sheer lack of nudity and sex scenes make this one stand out above the rest. It's about responsibility, family and love between two people regardless of sex. Ably shot on digital and efficiently edited. Markowitz handles the script he wrote well in translation and it's a much better journey than any gay film i've seen since Brokeback Mountain. A Winner.
