Review of She Done Him Wrong (1933) by Van R — 30 Aug 2009
SHE DONE HIM WRONG is a first-rate comic melodrama with Mae West as a sexy saloon singer up her diamond encrusted neck with jealous boyfriends and criminals. Cary Grant masquerades as a Salvation Army captain, while Noah Beery, Sr.
, runs a white slavery ring along with a counterfeiting operation. Gilbert Roland is cast as a Russian gigolo who has the hots for Lady Lou (Mae West) and wants her for himself. This is the movie that made Mae West a household name and incurred the wrath of the Catholic Church for all its rampant immorality.
Mae warbles three songs and asks Cary to come up and see her. SHE DOWN HIM WRONG helped Paramount Pictures weather the Great Depression.
