Review of Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015) by Philip G — 19 Apr 2015
For such a simple film, the Shaun the Sheep Movie is a surprisingly hilarious and charming film. Aardman has created yet another creative, funny and potentially timeless comedy that appeals not only to the general taste in humor, but also to audiences who are looking to find something small, fun and enjoyable for a change.
The film, like the cartoon series it spun off, employs no dialogue and relies solely on visuals to carry across everything: it's characters, setting and story, and it's done incredibly well. Most of the characters and their personalities we see in the film are, in the literal sense, seen, not spoken. Each character is consistent in their actions and ideas. The film and it's comedy wouldn't have worked otherwise, and, while it is guilty of making one or two pop culture references, the comedy is directly sourced from the characters and their environment, and it's hilarious, with one shining example being the scene where Shaun and his buddies were trying to learn how to behave in a restaurant. The Shaun the Sheep Movie, another 90-minute gem, is short, but packs in enough slapstick visual joy and hilarity to justify its length; it is neither dragged out or packed in too tightly; the pacing is consistent and makes for great fun for audience throughout the entirety of the film, rather than being sliced in different segments.
It's nice and refreshing to see a film like the Shaun the Sheep Movie. It's a entertaining and highly amusing ride that's sure to please anybody with an open mind towards animation and kid-friendly films in general. It goes without saying that both Aardman fans and the general audience will walk out of this movie pleased, with feelings equal to that of finishing a nice meal.
