Review of Shaun of the Dead (2004) by Mr. B — 11 Feb 2014
My rating for this movie isn't exactly how I feel about it. Meaning that I like it. I do, but I'm so overly familiar with it to the point that when I see it nowadays I get very bored by it. I get the same way when I see the movie Young Frankenstein. I was 17 when this movie came out and loved every minute of the movie. Now at 27 I find it overrated, but still somewhat enjoyable as a piece of horror comedy.
Shaun is somewhere in his late twenties and is going nowhere in his life. His girlfriend, Liz, dumps him and he spends much of his time with his best bud Ed at the Winchester where they usually get drunk. After a night of drunken fun, Shaun and Ed awake the next day to a zombie apocalypse! They head off to round up a few extra survivors: Liz, her friends David & Dianne along with Shaun's mum, Barbara. Their destination, of all places, is Ed's and Shaun's favorite: The Winchester.
The first half of this film was always great until the arrive at the Winchester in the later half. That's when it becomes very dull and repetitive. References to much of Romero's 'Dead' movies are throughout the film and that British wit never ceases to not make me laugh.
Part of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy which is followed by Hot Fuzz and The World's End.
