Perhaps the most visually stunning of all Zhang Yimous film (it won the technical prize in Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar in the cinematography section, the film also features one Gong Lis strongest performance - a complete change of pace for her compared with The Story of Qui Ju.
If that film proved the depht to her acting, this film is a tribute to her impressive range. She has never looked more radiant than here and she even gets to sing and dance, which she does with charm and flair.
You will find yourself humming one of her songs many months after you have seen the film!
