Review of Shanghai Kiss (2007) by William M — 04 Apr 2008
Hmmm. This was an interesting movie with some very lovely women and a guy who has problems with his family. Liam's problems relate to his parents in that he can never talk to them, or moreover, his father. He is of Chinese descent and born in America and was raised American yet because of his descent, people expect him to act Chinese. In the beginning, we meet Adelaide (Hayden Panettiere's character) and she's sweet and adorable and makes us miss her from Heroes. :) She's like the young lady who's more mature than her years suggest. It also makes us wish we were younger or she older, to do anything with that lovely 16 yr old. After Liam's grandmother dies and he goes to Shanghai, does he meet Micki (sp? - Kelly Hu's character) who is another very lovely lady and we miss her on tv also. She shows us another part of life in a foreign country which is foreign to us and Liam and to a point that he can not understand until she explains it. We feel sympathy for her character. In the end, she ultimately helps Liam break free from his "curse" of misunderstandings and his heart and soul are able to accept love again and also to forgive the people in his life that love him.
Of note, while watching the dvd extras, there's a part with Micki in it that just changes everything. But, I still loved the movie.
