Review of Shanghai (2010) by Shaun P — 03 Nov 2010
Excellent production design cannot save this half-baked noir wannabe. Director Mikael Hafstrom seems more interested in money shots than staging coherent scenes, most detrimentally in the numerous shootouts that make no spacial or logical sense.
The all star cast is grossly underused; Gong Li is the only one who brings passion to her role, but she is matched with the miscast John Cusack, who lacks the charm and gusto required here as the leading man.
A huge bore.
