Review of Shanghai (2010) by Dennis K — 02 Aug 2013
I've always loved watching noir, and it's nice to see something current in the genre. Shanghai is a technically well-made periodical noir piece. Where it falters is, its plot and characters. A murder mystery that we don't feel like giving a damn about.
Neither does it perk up any interest as the protagonist gradually finds clues. It just seems all too forced and convenient. And that's the inherent problem. Along with the fact, that we care even less for the characters.
Bottom line, it's worth watching if you are a film noir fan. Otherwise, it's probably a waste of time.
