Review of Shane (1953) by Luke G — 28 Jul 2007
A film of profound style, esquisite dialogue, and vibrant but not gratuitious intensity. A hero named "Shane" mysteriously appears out of no where to save a small town from the clutches of greedy cattle drivers.
One of the films master strokes is that main characters and the audience immediately find this "Shane" comforting and likable. Though the mystery of who he is, where he comes from, and why he is there are never revealed.
Not only is this a thrilling western with gorgeous vistas, superb acting, thrilling brawls, and a fantastic final shoot-out, this is a morality play where every action has a purpose and a consequence.
Bravo to director George Stevens for creating one of the greatest westerns of all-time, maybe even the best!
