This movie really captured my imagination. I loved Van Heflin and Jean Arthur as a couple. There's so much more going on underneath the dialogue. There is a lot of tension as they try to hold their family and community together; the direction and script are top notch throughout (except for all the day for night scenes which totally draw attention to themselves but also somehow work in a way - the weirdly bright nights give a feeling of mysticism to this story. I think it's very much in the vein of american mythology.).

I loved every second and of course, the final scene was spellbinding as Shane rides out of the valley and into legend.
