Review of Shane (1953) by Dave H — 15 Nov 2010
Classic, famous Western, the notion of which never particularly appealed until I read somewhere it was a prime inspiration for "Mad Max 2". And yeah, Shane is pretty much the iconic, original "reluctant gunfighter" tale, rich with narrative and visual poetry.
It's slow and static and stiff in this day and age, with overdoses of cornball sentimentality and dramatic scoring compared to more perfect contemporaries like "The Searchers". But the Wyoming cinematography is stunning in any era, and the "man's gotta do what a.
.." morality is deeper and more complex than the simplistic plot might first suggest. And I always love the goofy look on the kid's face when the gun explodes right in front of him.
