Review of Shane (1953) by Ryan V — 18 Apr 2012
Alan Ladd plays the title role in this enduring 1953 film. Shane is the archtypical Western drifter who falls in with a family of farmers and gets caught up in their range war. Although reluctant to engage in violence, Shane is ultimately forced to pick up his guns and fight for his nigh defenseless caretakers.
This movie has a standard issue Western plot, but it rises above the chaff thanks to strong performances by Ladd, Jean Arthur, Brandon De Wilde, Jack Palance, and Van Heflin. The action scenes are intense, but the most iconic part of this movie is the ambiguous ending.
