Review of Shane (1953) by Brian S — 20 Aug 2010
Despite the label as one of the all-time classic Westerns, I find this film incredibly obnoxious. Alan Ladd plays an incredibly dull hero with never much interesting to say or do, and his back story is pretty much nonexistant.
Brandon De Wilde is one of the campiest, most annoying child actors I've ever seen. everyone in this movie talks too much. save for a bar brawl and a poorly-filmed fist fight, there's no conflict.
it's all repetitive going on about staying on your land, and what so-and-so might do to us if we fight back, and violence is bad. passive aggression does not make for an entertaining or even thought-provoking Western.
I'll bump my rating half a star for Jack Palance showing the rest of the cast what intimidation looks like--even if only briefly.
