Review of Shame (2011) by Gerry R — 13 Oct 2012
Looking forward to it and and completely disappointed. An empty, and I'd say disingenuous but I have the feeling someone was trying to make a good movie here but I don't know how they got it so wrong, mess.
Imagine a shallow person with good intentions about making a movie about sex addiction, add Hollywood touches, and you get this. The main character is extremely good looking and so are the women he beds in his upscale apartment.
For starters, having someone who looks more like Philip Seymour Hoffman play the lead would have done much for this film, both for his looks and his acting ability. Yes, I'm saying that I didn't think Michael Fassbender was all that great.
Intense, sure, but I think his inability to convey anything more than that was part of the movie's faults. In fact, that about sums up what's wrong with this movie- man has lots of sex, seems to hate it and himself, we have no idea why he does it, where it came from, or why we should care.
Earnest pretentiousness, plus emptiness, equals the kind of film I find the most frustrating of all. And this is it.
