Review of Shame (2011) by Abdullah A — 27 Jun 2015
Steve McQueen's shattering sex drama is a story of sorrow, self-abuse and solitude. Michael Fassbender gives a powerhouse performance as a private, disassociated sex addict, and McQueen raises some interesting issues regarding intimacy and excess; ultimately exploring the strain between sex and pleasure.
McQueen has a real knack for exposing vulnerability through ambiguous characters, and he never gives away more than he needs to. The film's chilling restraint and teasing, uneasy air of unpredictability will keep your eyes prized open throughout its entire 101 mins.
