Review of Shame (2011) by Sean H — 28 Jan 2014
An interesting watch, definitely for the so called cinephiles out there. I think this is verging on (or perhaps is) what many would label as 'Art house', due to the slow creeping pacing, sparse dialogue, long stares and narrative that is so character driven that the plot initially seems to have gone nowhere.
In retrospect it seems that film is generally more concerned with subtext rather than what is actually happening on screen, and I got the impression that much of what happens is actually unsaid; the ambiguous relationship between Fassbender and Mulligan and the events that led them to where they are come to mind here.
Maybe the pacing was a little too sluggish, or perhaps I was never entirely interested in the main character and his struggles, but I felt this film didn't completely grab me. That said, this is a break from mainstream conventional cinema and is rather bleak and unforgiving and Fassbender is superb and did his best with what he was given.
