There's a saying that American movies take you into the forest, scare the shit outta you, then take you home and tuck you into bed. And that European movies take you into the forest, scare the shit outta you, and leave you there.
SHAME is a very Euro-Arthouse take on an addict who can get no satisfaction, and the disposable people he damages chasing the elixir. Fassbender is spellbinding in his agonizing isolation, but this very punishing movie refuses to give him (or anybody he comes into contact with) a chance at redemption.
