Review of Shallow Hal (2001) by Joshua M — 05 Aug 2010
Shallow Hal is more or less one of Jack Blacks best preformances, but its nothing special a all. The premise of the movie is acually pretty intruiging and interesting, but one of the things that lets it down is how slow it is.
I dunno how long it is, maybe 110 minutes? But for 85 mintues of it, all we see us is the same; Jack Black and Gweneth Paltrow having fun, Jack Black thinking that Gweneth Paltrow is not overweight, blah blah blah.
Another thing that lets it down is how predictable it is. From the very start we know how most of it will work out, we all know that something will happen between them that will make them split, but OBVIOUSLY Jack Black will get her back.
And another thing, Jack Blacks character is only good with the ladies because of his looks, and really, that defeasts the purpose of the whole movie. Its not really funny it all, it has a couple smart moments, but thats about it.
I mean, if your looking for a time waster, and some eye candy (half the time) with Gweneth Paltrow, sure it could be worth a watch once, but I dont think I'd even pick it up if it were free, it would just take up shelf space that I could put say.
...Inception on.
