Review of Saving Face (2004) by Jen T — 20 May 2006
A drama that ends in a happy-go-lucky way.
Whilst the movie is categorized as a comedy, I personally did not find the violent eviction of a 48 year-old unmarried woman from her father's house - because she's discovered pregnant - funny in any way. The only way she can be redeemed from her father and save the family from shame, is if she marries asap the first man that will actually want her.
The woman - who is a widow - has a daughter in her late 20s. The daughter looks more like a teenager who's never had a relationship and is looking to discover her inner self through a fling with a girlfriend, than a convinced lesbian. Anyways.
So what will these two characters, shun away from their hostile traditional immigrant community, do now?
The shy submissive mother will all of a sudden rebel against her father's arranged marriage and marry the one she loves. The daughter will all of a sudden have he courage to proclain her homosexuality and kiss publicly.
Everyone clap, life's beautiful.
I do admit that Joan Chen plays beautifully the part of a reserved and very taciturn character, but this alone cannot save the movie.
