Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Andrew D — 11 Aug 2008
Taut thriller/dark comedy with a good story and good cinematography. There are some hilarious lines, as well as some shocking scenes. The violence is sparse but effectively staged. Ewan McGregor is great.
The writing is flawed though - the way the events play out is a bit implausible and unclear. There were some interesting twists, particularly the end, and the role reversal between the smart character and the amoral character. The characters are unlikeable from the start, so their descent into evil, greed, and betrayal isn't very surprising.
A Simple Plan "lifted" the story, although it was more dramatic, and the characters were more believable and realistic. Both very good but flawed movies worth watching.
