Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Nate J — 24 Oct 2008
This psychological thriller is the debut film from director Danny Boyle, and it features performances by the then unknown Ewan McGregor and Kerry Fox. It?s an effective little low budget thriller reminiscent of Blood Simple.
The set up is pretty routine, three roommates find a dead body and a briefcase full of money and decide to hide the body and keep the money, as always this is a big mistake. What makes this interesting is the way that the various characters change over the course of the movie, they surprise you as to who you?ll be rooting for by the end.
It takes a little while to really get going, but the last twenty minutes are quite good. Everyone involved in this will move on to bigger and better things, this first movie is by no means extraordinary, but it shows the potential of the talent involved.
