Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Zane T — 31 Jan 2009
Before he was ruined by Hollywood, Danny Boyle was a great director, which is evident in his first movie. Three shallow Glasgow yuppies take in a fourth flatmate who is a criminal who OD's leaving a suitcase of stolen money behind him.
Rather than call the police, they keep the money, dismember the flatmate and dispose of him. Then, the greed and selfishness of the three flatmates take over and leads to murder. This movie isn't as violent as Robert Redford made it out.
Ewan McGregor, before he was famous, really takes a beating (literally) in this movie with a drill to the forehead in true Hitchhockian tension and a weird scene in a restroom where he is assault by a redhead who looks strangely like that Ken Jenning's guy from Jeopardy.
I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire, but I hope that Boyle has gone back to making movie of this caliber.
