Review of Shallow Grave (1994) by Lizzy M — 24 Jun 2011
Danny Boyle's first feature film involves three self-absorbed roommates who find their new roommate dead, but full of money. It's a solid flick about paranoia, greed, and trust (or lack thereof) among friends.
The three leads do well, and their differing personalities work very nicely with one another. You've got the boisterous roommate played by Ewan McGregor, the flirty roommate portrayed by Kerry Fox, and the quiet roommate depicted by Christopher Eccleston.
The first quarter of the movie is basically the three of them looking for a fourth roommate. After they find him, the film then takes a turn down a pretty dark path. It evolves from a black comedy to more of a noir/thriller/somewhat black comedy hybrid.
Eccleston's transformation in the film is particularly amazing.
