Review of Shakespeare in Love (1998) by Ricardo O — 22 Oct 2009

Good movie. It is well written and even well acted. BUT...it did not deserve the Oscar for Best Picture. That should have gone to Saving Private Ryan. As much as Shakespeare IS a good film, Saving Private Ryan is a great film.

The writing is the best part about the film and does deserve the Oscar it got for that and even had good editing and cinematography but thankfully those two went to Spielberg's film. It also deserved it's other wins in costume design and art direction with Elizabeth being the only other contender for those awards. Also as much as I do think both Judi Dench and Gwyneth Paltrow deserved their wins, in my opinion it they mainly won because for what I remember there weren't any other memorable performances by an actress that year. Good film, not great but good. 8/10.
