98 was a very, very good year in movies and this one fit as one of the best. Good story with a nice twist on the boy meets girl formula in that it is a period piece that puts historical figures in a fictional account. Paltrow and Dame Judi are excellent in this an deserved to win, although with Dame Judi this was a small consolation to being hosed from the year before. Fiennes was very good in the lead role and is able to carry along the story quite well and stand up to some excellent British actors, namely Dench, Wilkinson, Firth, and Everett along with Rush.
A very enjoyable film.
