Review of Shaft (1971) by Ken S — 07 Mar 2013
"Shaft" really is one bad mother. Gordon Parks directs this badass movie starring Richard Roundtree as the black Private Dick who is a sex machine to all the chicks. As a Private Eye/Detective/Action/Thriller film, it is fairly solid on it's own, not nearly as over the top and campy as some blaxploitation films, which is part of what sets the film apart from so many others of the time, but obviously what set "Shaft" apart from all the other private eye pictures that came before was the very fact that he was a black guy who didn't take shit from anyone and didn't just do what any white guy told him too.
Unlike other blaxploitation films of the day it also managed to not just demonize white folks, as a result it comes off more realistic. The film has definitely stood the test of time despite being very much of it's day.
It is a great film, lots of fun.
