Review of Shadows and Fog (1991) by Max K — 14 Feb 2010
Generally I prefer when Woody Allen puts the "Woody Allen" character in an anachronistic setting (Zelig, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, Love and Death) but it just doesn't work in Shadows and Fog.
Aside from style there is seriously no reason for the film to be set in turn of the century Europe. It does not offer any sort of insight or humor regarding the period, nor does it have the real expressionistic feel of a film from Fritz Lang.
Aside from some funny moments, the story has a hard time staying with a certain rhythm. The characters are far from gripping and they don't appear to have any connection with the audience. Aside from some good performances, the film could have done just as well without half of the all-star cast (especially Madonna in a worthless cameo).
Not Allen's worst film, but definitely far from recommendable.
