Review of Shadowlands (1993) by Michael H — 20 Jun 2007
A great illustration of how it's easy to explain the problem of evil (or suffering, or pain) in the abstract, but a lot harder when faced with personal tragedy. In the abstract Lewis rationalizes that "pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Once Joy is taken from him he responds to Warnie's attempts to comfort him, "It's this bloody awful mess, and that's all there is to it." By the end of the movie Lewis declares "I have no answers anymore, only the life I have lived.".
This movie is the story of a man who held onto his faith in the face of incomprehensible personal tragedy.
