Review of Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by Elin S — 08 Apr 2010
This movie had an ingenious concept. What if Max Schreck, who played Count Orlock In Nosferatu, was really a vampire?
It is an interesting tale that was written by Steven Katz. Who has been quoted as saying, "When you watch Nosferatu, it's like watching a documentary on vampires.".
John Malkovich plays F.W. Murnau, the director of Nosferatu. Impassioned, and completely dedicated to his art. "If it doesn't happen in the frame, then it doesn't exist.".
Willem Dafoe plays Max Schreck. An immortal who ages. A vampire who agrees to star in the film if he gets to feed on the leading lady. Two excellent choices for these two roles.
There is an all-star supporting cast as well, Cary Elwes, Eddie Izzard, Catherine McCormack, & Udo Kier.
This was also the first mainstream movie directed by noted director E. Elias Merhige, of Begotten fame.
An interesting take on the Hollywood machine, the film industries beginnings, and vampires as a whole.
