Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Dan C — 25 May 2008
Innocence faces down evil, and contrary to what we might expect, effects a sort of victory. Joseph Cotten at his most Satanic, yet weak and spiteful in a way that makes him all the more dangerous, and Teresa Wright as the ingenue not totally aware of her untapped reservoirs of strength and steel. When she hisses at him, "I'll kill you myself...that's how I feel about you"; it's a great moment at the movies.
There's a lot of creepy and interesting stuff going on out of centre frame in this overwrought domestic psychodrama. Would make a good double bill with "Night of The Hunter".
